SMGFAN: What was the best thing about being a part of the SD production?

James Gunn (JG): Undoubtedly, it was the group of people I worked with -- from the director to the producers to the cast, it was a real tight-knit group, and I made a lot of close friends.

SMGFAN: What was the biggest challenge you faced in writing the screenplay?

JG: Trying to figure out the tone. There was a lot of back and forth in terms of exactly what movie we were trying to make. I don't think we completely decided until a couple of weeks before releasing it.

SMGFAN: If there was one scene in the movie that you could re-write, which one would it be and why?

JG: Probably the scene with Pamela Anderson, because it's a little unclear what's going on.

SMGFAN: You're also a musician! :) (We love musicians since one of us has played over 100 club gigs) Is writing more fun than music or is it all the same animal to you?

JG: In some ways, music is more fun. In some ways, though, writing is more fulfilling. At least to me. I enjoy both their similarities and differences.

SMGFAN: You have a fun-sounding career. Do you plan to expand into acting or other creative endeavors or are you perfectly happy being a writer?

JG: I've done a lot of acting, actually -- I starred in my second movie, The Specials, along with Rob Lowe, my brother Sean, and my buddy Jamie Kennedy, as well as various other things. I am perfectly happy writing, but I like doing other stuff as well.

SMGFAN: Is it true that the Angel character 'Gunn' was inspired by you and your brother Sean?

JG: Who knows. Sean and I both worked with Joss Whedon over a period of a couple months (Sean acted in a couple episodes of Angel and Joss and I developed a pilot for Fox together) -- directly afterwards, the character Gunn showed up on TV. The math says 'yes,' I suppose.

SMGFAN: What was it like working with Sarah? (I'm sure you knew this was coming)

JG: Sarah's awesome. I immediately liked her: she's funny, beautiful, and sincerely in love with Freddie, all of which are very appealing. In terms of the actress-writer relationship, she's great -- she offers her own ideas, but always in the service of the larger story. Unfortunately, our schedules were very different during shooting -- Sarah had to fly back and forth between Australia and the US shooting Scooby and Buffy and I had to fly back and forth because I was working on a couple other projects at the time, so we often missed each other. It became an on-set joke that we were avoiding each other for some mysterious reason. But I really like her, and I became good friends with her fiance (now husband) as well.

SMGFAN: As a writer, making the audience laugh is much harder than making them cry. Where do you find your inspiration in writing humorous scenes like the infamous 'farting' scene in SD?

JG: I was inspired a lot by my own real life pets during filming, especially my own dog, Aubrey. Other than that, my ideas come from anywhere I can find them. I'm usually as surprised to see what comes out of my fingers when I type as anyone else, and I crack up all the time. I distinctly remember writing the farting scene -- it's one of the few scenes that remained from the very first draft -- I was simultaneously laughing and feeling ashamed of myself for doing something so low-brow! Still, I couldn't deny that I found the idea of Scooby-Doo pulling on his tail and farting hilarious. I'm three years old inside.

SMGFAN: Have you found the meaning of life yet? (Sorry, I always ask this question)

JG: Since I'm working ten hours a day on Scooby 2, and I'm very much in the Shaggy and Scooby mind frame, I think I'd have to say 'eggplant.'

SMGFAN: What can you share with us about the sequel? We promise we won't tell anyone…just the 30,000 visitors we get a day.

JG: I can't tell you too much -- but I will say we'll be focusing on the mystery element of the story more than in the first one, and all five main characters will continue to evolve in new ways. We'll be posting occasional tidbits of SD2 info on jamesgunn.com, too.
