Charities
Sarah is very active in supporting her favorite charities. In the past, Sarah has donated some of her time and talent to:
CARE
Sarah has been an ambassador for CARE since 2007. You can find out more about her work for this organization on our page dedicated to CARE here. (soon!)
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, nondenominational Christian housing organization. They rely on volunteers to "build simple, decent, affordable, houses in partnership with those in need of adequate shelter. Since 1976, Habitat has built more than 100,000 houses in more than 79 countries, including some 30,000 houses across the United States".
In 1999, Sarah spent a few weeks of her summer hiatus in the Dominican Republic working as a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity.
MAKE-A-WISH FOUNDATION
Make-A-Wish Foundation is a favorite of the Buffy people. It is an organization that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses, through the help of private donors and volunteers. Over 83,000 wishes have been granted to children around the world since 1980.
Sarah frequently contributes autographed materials to auctions on behalf of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Los Angeles.
BREAST CANCER AWARENESS
Sarah participated in Ford's 2003 Tied To The Cause Breast Cancer Awareness campaign benefiting The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Her ad, which first appeared in August, is one of several showing celebrities wearing the "Ford breast cancer awareness scarf in a national ad campaign designed to garner attention for this important cause".
Sarah attended the 5th annual Young Survival Coalition's for Breast Cancer benefit on Oct. 9, 2003 for the Angel Orensanz Foundation in New York City, where she hosted the auction.
9/11 FUNDS
In 2001, Sarah donated and helped raised funds for the victims of the September 11th attacks on the United States. She collected over $60,000 from the Buffy group and donated 2 gowns to The Glory Charitable Auctions to benefit the Widows' and Children's Fund of the Uniformed Firefighter's Association.
STARLIGHT STARBRIGHT CHILDREN’S FOUNDATION
December 4th 2003 was a very busy day for Sarah. She hosted the Starlight Children’s Foundation's "Heart Of Gold" Annual Benefit Dinner in Beverly Hills, California. This event honored philanthropist Alex Spanos "for his commitment to the wellness of his community and his generosity and selflessness to benefit seriously ill children”.
In 2007, Sarah designed a Swarovski miniature star that was auctioned off on eBay to raise funds for Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation.
OTHERS
She has also donated 2 pairs of jeans for The Jeans for Genes Auction to benefit the National Hemophilia Foundation. Several well-known celebrities gave signed jeans for the cause. Sarah's contribution helped raised over $7,000 for this charity.
The wildfires in Southern California in late 2003 touched Sarah so much that she visited San Bernardino County to see firsthand the devastation that this area suffered and the tragic losses endured by its residents. She is helping with the fund-raising campaign to replant the scorched terrain and stop further disasters such as land/mudslides from happening.
Sarah continues her charitable work by custom-designing a pair of jeans for Clothes Off Our Back, an organization helping children in need.
On December 4th 2003 Sarah proceeded to the Divine Design 2003 Gala where she was presented with the Divine Design's Women of Style award "for her outstanding contributions to the world of design and her humanitarian efforts on behalf of persons with AIDS".
In 2007, Sarah designed one of Frekericks Custom Corset for an auction on Clothes Off Our Back. The proceeds from the auction benefitted America's Second Harvest, The Art of Elysium, World Education and autism research. Sarah’s corset sold for $1,551 almost three times the price of the next most expensive corset.
In 2008, when she visited The Rachael Ray Show, she signed a fridge that was also signed by every guest from the show’s second season. The vintage refridgerator was afterwards sold on Charity Folks for $5,000 to benefit Yum-o!!, a nonprofit organization launched by Rachael Ray that empowers kids and their families to develop healthy relationships with food and cooking by teaching families to cook, feeding hungry kids and funding cooking education and scholarships.
In February 2008, along with celebrities such as Hilary Duff, Amanda Bynes, Jacqueline Bisset, Kim Raver, John Leguizamo, Minnie Driver, Dave Navarro and Regina King, Sarah bared their skin in the Vaseline “Skin is Amazing” campaign. After being revealed as the Mystery Celebrity, Sarah’s autographed portrait was sold during the Vaseline “Skin is Amazing” photo auction, which benefitted the Coalition of Skin Diseases.
In September 2008, Sarah designed and signed a shoe for Stuart Weitzman’s eighth annual celebrity shoe auction, benefitting the research to cure Ovarian Cancer. Proceeds from the auction supported the work of Dr. Marsha Moses of the Folkman Institute at Children's Hospital Boston. Dr. Moses and her team are working to develop a urine test for ovarian cancer. Sarah’s shoe was sold for $1,500 and was the item that sold for the highest amount.
