On June 12, 2002, I was lucky enough to meet Buffy herself; Sarah Michelle Gellar. My friends Josh, Jonelle, and I, along with my mom, were waiting outside ABC studios, hoping to get into the studio audience for Live With Regis and Kelly since Sarah was going to be a guest on the show that day. We were dressed as the cast from Scooby Doo- I was Velma, Jonelle was Daphne, and Josh was Fred. We were waiting outside when a limo pulled up. Jonelle made some comment about, “Hey, I bet that’s Sarah’s limo,” but she clearly wasn’t serious about it. However, a crowd started to gather around the limo and it turned out that it WAS Sarah’s limo. Sarah got out, along with a few other blondes, and walked inside. All we really saw was the back of her head for about 5 seconds. Even though it was such a short time of seeing her, I started to completely hyperventilate. I was definitely on the verge of tears…and I had just seen her for 5 seconds! Sarah is as gorgeous in person as she is on television, by the way.
We continued to wait to be let into the studio. It turned out that the studio was full that day, but since someone that worked at ABC used to work for my dad, we were able to get in. It was only a few minutes before the show was going to start, and we took the only available seats in the place- FIRST ROW. I was thrilled; the seats were off to the side but it was still first row. We all watched the show, eagerly waiting for Sarah to come out (we loved Kelly Ripa by the way, she was really funny, cool, and really pretty).
It was finally time for Sarah to come out and do her interview. The three of us stood up and started screaming like crazy for her. To be honest, I don’t really remember a single thing she said in the interview. I was just in so much shock that Sarah was sitting only feet away from me, that I couldn’t pay attention to anything she was saying. Her thong was coming out of the back of her skirt a bit, and we could see it at the angle we were sitting at, which was pretty funny. Not many people can say they’ve seen Sarah’s thong!
At the commercial, I asked my friend Josh to take some pictures of her for me. I couldn’t do it myself since I was shaking so much. We were waving to her and she kept smiling and waving back which was very, very cool. On her way out, Kelly Ripa said something about loving our outfits and Sarah said how she loved them too, which of course made all of us just DIE. I was just sitting there with my mouth hanging open in complete shock because I couldn’t believe that she was actually talking to us. I don’t think I ever said anything- I was too excited, lol- but Josh called out something about how we’d be on MTV’s TRL later, and she said she’d look for us. After that, we were all completely dead. We got to meet Kelly Ripa and Linda Cardellini (who was taping an interview for a later episode, but we had no idea she would be there so it was a cool surprise. We adored Linda, she was so sweet and just so incredible lovable).
Later on in the day, it was time to go to MTV Studios to go on TRL. We knew we’d get in this time since we had tickets, but Josh and I were nervous that they’d ask for ID, since we weren’t actually the age you were supposed to be to be on the show. However, they didn’t check any IDs, and once we got in, everything was fine. They actually moved people so that we could be on the area of the studio that was on TV the most. We met Carson Daly…but I just won’t go there, LOL. All I’ll say about him is that he’s really hot in person, but he’s not exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer.
Finally the cast of Scooby Doo, minus Matthew Lillard (since he was having his baby) came out. Again, we went crazy for them. Throughout the entire interview, Sarah and Linda were smiling at us, waving at us, etc. Then Carson asked a question that was something like, “Do you think fans under 17 will know what Scooby Doo is?” Sarah responded with, “Well my friends over here know…I met them this morning, these are my friends from this morning…” I really could not believe what was happening. We all stood up and started waving since we couldn’t think; we were just so amazed. Looking back, I wished I had said something instead of just waving like an idiot, but oh well. Freddie started to say something about us but Carson cut him off and started asking another question.
Josh and Jonelle turned to each other after that, just basically saying, “Oh my god!” I looked at Sarah and her attention was still on us, and when she saw me look back at her, this huge grin crossed over her face. That smile is something I will never forget. She just looked so happy that she had made us so happy (it was easy to tell how thrilled we all were). It was one of those, “this is why I do what I do. I do this to make others happy” type of smiles. And better yet, she was looking me straight in the eye when she did it.
They finished the interview, and the exit door was literally right next to us. It was probably about 2 feet away. They all started to walk out; Sarah was first. She smiled to us one last time and said bye to us. I think I must have blacked out, because I don’t remember Linda or Freddie walking out that door afterwards, but they must have.
So there’s my Sarah story. It was easily one of the best days of my life and it’s a day that I won’t soon forget. I remember everything about that day so clearly, even though it was more than a year ago. Sarah was so incredibly nice and just seemed like a great person. My mom thought so too, and she isn’t even a fan. She was just so awesome.
