Winning Entry to SMGFAN Essay Writing Contest:
When growing up we all have people we look up to, people
we want to be like. When I grew up we didn't have anyone
like Buffy or Sarah. I tended to have musical icons when
I was in my early teens because I didn't relate to the things
that I saw on the TV shows. Carol in Growing Pains, Kelly
in Married with Children. I didn't get it. I still dont.
When I first sat down to watch 'Welcome to the Hellmouth'
it wasn't with the intention to be a fan. I never expected
Sarah to have such an impact on me, as I watched more I
saw this woman portraying a strong willed high school student
not afraid to be herself. Sure she had issues about dating
and what to wear but it wasn't the be all and end all of
her character. I began to find out more about Sarah Michelle
Gellar as the show went on. I was amazed at how she worked
her way to where she now is, brought up by a single mother
and that she didn't let the negative people around her get
her down. She knew what she wanted and she went out and
got it. That was something I admired. Growing up I was the
kid that was picked on. To know that someone I admired had
gone through the same things as me and made it, made me
feel stronger inside. I dont care what people think of me
now and I now know that if I want something I have to go
out and get it. People are going to try and knock you down
no matter what you do, it is how you handle it that makes
the difference. Being a fan of Sarah's has helped me realise
that. I look at what she has achieved and what she has overcome
and I see that I can do it as well.
